Emma Raducanu Pulls Plug on 2025 Season and Makes Coaching Decision – Tennis Now

Emma Raducanu has closed the curtain on her 2025 season.
The 29th-ranked Raducanu, who had been suffering from heat-related dizziness and a back issue during the recent Asian swing, will take time off before beginning a training block in preparation for 2026, Sky Sports reports.
The 2021 US Open champion also plans to consider working with ex-Rafa Nadal coach Francisco Roig in 2026, according to Sky Sports.
After her 6-1, 6-2 loss to Elena Rybakina in the US Open third round in August, Raducanu said she planned to continue working with Roig through the end of the 2025 season. Now, given the fact she’s pulled the plug on her season, Raducanu has committed to Roig for 2026, which will enable the pair to collaborate on an extensive training block.
“I think it’s been a pretty successful weeks in a sense that we’ve made good improvements,” Raducanu said of Roig during the US Open.
“I think there are certain parts of my game which have gotten better for sure. Today, you know, my weaknesses were highlighted, but I think it’s only been three weeks, and he can’t really work miracles, you know. So I know we’re doing good work, and I just look forward to continuing.”
The 22-year-old Briton retired from her Wuhan Open opener last week due to dizziness while training American Ann Li 1-6, 1-4.
Still, it’s been a season of resurgence for Raducanu, who finished 2024 ranked No. 58. As of today, Raducanu would qualify for a seed for the 2026 Australian Open, though obviously that could change between now and the start of the Melbourne major in January.
The 57-year-old Roig was a long-time coaching member of Nadal’s team, later coached Matteo Berrettini and has experience coaching on the WTA Tour as well. Roig, who reached a career-high rank of No. 60 on the ATP Tour, also coached 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens.
Roig succeeded Mark Petchey, who had been coaching Raducanu on an informal basis since the Miami Open. Tennis Channel analyst Petchey had agreed to work with Raducanu through the end of the grass-court season, but could not commit to coaching her full time because of his television commentary obligations.
Working with Petchey, who previously coached Andy Murray, Raducanu registered some of her best results in years.
In her brief tenure with Roig, Raducanu has worked the wide serve on the deuce side effectively to set up her first strike and has tried to spread the court with her shots. Raducanu has also modified her forehand a bit incorporating a higher take-back on that wing in an effort to generate a bit more power.
Raducanu has posted a 28-21 record on the season breaking serve 38 percent over the course of those 49 matches.
