Fans erupt in jubilation as CSK sign in Dewald Brevis for IPL 2025

In a season where the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have struggled to find their rhythm, the announcement of South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis joining the squad has reignited hope among fans. CSK, currently languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table with only two wins from seven matches, made a surprise yet exciting move by roping in Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh. The 21-year-old, often hailed as ‘Baby AB’ for his striking resemblance to AB de Villiers in style and innovation, joins the yellow army for a whopping INR 2.2 crore.

CSK’s spark in a dull season

Brevis brings with him not only flair but also experience across global T20 leagues. Having previously played for the Mumbai Indians in 2022 and 2024, the right-hander has racked up 1,787 runs in 81 T20s, including a blistering top score of 162. Most recently, he played a pivotal role in MI Cape Town’s SA20 triumph, smashing an 18-ball 38 in the final and finishing the tournament with an impressive strike rate of 184. With CSK’s batting line-up lacking spark this season, Brevis’ arrival couldn’t be more timely.

The yellow brigade welcomes Dewald Brevis

The announcement triggered a wave of jubilation among the Super Kings’ passionate fanbase. Social media platforms lit up as fans welcomed their newest signing. For many, this was more than just a tactical addition — it was a sign of hope in a challenging campaign.

At just 21, Brevis already enjoys cult status, and his connection with fans, especially through his bold strokeplay and fearless demeanour, mirrors the charisma once held by MS Dhoni in his early days. In the absence of key players like Gurjapneet and Ruturaj Gaikwad, and with Dhoni resuming captaincy duties, Brevis’ youthful exuberance and fearless cricket could be the X-factor CSK needs.

Interestingly, Brevis went unsold in the 2025 IPL auction despite entering with a base price of INR 75 lakh. Since then, he has been in scintillating form, ending as the second-highest run-getter in South Africa’s domestic one-day and first-class competitions. Now, fate has handed him a second chance, and CSK fans believe the stars are aligning for a turnaround.
