In May, the skipper rounded off what has been a fine first season for her as our full-time captain by leading the Reds out in the cup final under the arch. The weekend before, our no.4 got the assist for Ella Toone’s goal in the eventful 4-3 reverse at Arsenal, the same game in which she stepped up to score her first United penalty, as we pursued an extraordinary comeback in the WSL finale.

The breakout nature of Hini’s campaign meant she ended it as a mainstay of the midfield, starting the three big matches against City, Arsenal and Chelsea. The Japan international’s solid shifts for the team don’t show up in the month’s goal and assist statistics, but she was unlucky not to at least have one in the latter, after Elisabeth Terland nodded in her pinpoint cross during the derby, but for the effort to be disallowed for a debatable foul by our top-scoring striker.
