World Cup qualifying round-up as Cameroon must wait

Cameroon must wait to see if their second-placed spot in Group D in the African section is definitely enough to clinch a play-off place. Cape Verde have reached their first-ever finals after a nerveless 3-0 victory over Eswatini booked their ticket to next summer’s tournament.

Bryan Mbeumo and Andre Onana’s nation remain next in the standings but a 0-0 draw at home to Angola means they are relying on results elsewhere to seal their fate. Angola twice hit the woodwork at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, with both Reds starting, although Onana is currently on loan at Tranzonspor.

The goalless stalemate means the door has been left open for DR Congo, Uganda or Nigeria to leapfrog the Indomitable Lions as best runners-up, although there is only a slim chance of that happening and Cameroon should have done enough to earn a place in the knockout phase.
